# Loan lease payoff coverage

[Auto](https://riskado.com/auto-insurance/) · Updated Oct 1, 2026

Loan lease payoff coverage is optional auto coverage for a financed or leased vehicle. After a covered total loss, it can pay the eligible difference between the car's actual cash value and the larger amount you still owe on the loan or lease. It is often called GAP or loan/lease coverage, and the endorsement sets its limit and exclusions.

Also called: loan/lease payoff coverage, loan/lease gap

If a financed or leased car is totaled or stolen, your [collision coverage](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/collision-coverage/) or [comprehensive coverage](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/comprehensive-coverage/) generally pays the car's [actual cash value](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/actual-cash-value/), not your loan balance. When you owe more than the car is worth, the lender expects you to pay the difference, according to the [California Department of Insurance (opens in a new tab)](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/01-auto/hadaccident.cfm). Loan lease payoff [coverage](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/coverage/) is built to pay part or all of that difference, within its limit and minus the charges it excludes. Check three things first: whether it appears on your [declarations page](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/declarations-page/), whether the car carries collision and comprehensive coverage, and which loan charges the [endorsement](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/endorsement/) leaves out.

## How the payoff is calculated, with an example

One published [endorsement](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/rider/), [National General Form GE 425 (opens in a new tab)](https://nationalgeneral.com/forms_catalog/PA400_09011999_PA_V2.pdf), applies only when shown on the declarations page and, after a total loss, pays the difference between the auto's actual [cash value](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/cash-value/) and any greater amount you are legally obligated to pay under a written loan or lease. It subtracts the deductible, excludes certain charges and caps the benefit at 25% of actual cash value. The balances below are illustrations using that structure.

Illustrative total loss with loan/lease payoff coverage

Hover or tap a row to highlight it.

| Item | Amount |
| --- | --- |
| Actual cash value at total loss | $24,000 |
| Collision or comprehensive deductible | $1,000 |
| Actual cash value after deductible | $24,000 − $1,000 = $23,000 |
| Loan balance | $27,500 |
| Excluded charges (past-due amounts, warranty balance, other) | $500 |
| Eligible loan amount | $27,500 − $500 = $27,000 |
| Payoff difference | $27,000 − $23,000 = $4,000 |
| Endorsement cap (25% of $24,000) | $6,000 |
| Loan/lease payoff benefit | $4,000 |
| Physical-damage payment plus payoff benefit | $23,000 + $4,000 = $27,000 |

The lender or lessor applies the settlement under the contract. You can still owe the excluded amounts, such as unpaid installments, excess mileage, wear and tear or collection expenses. Current forms may calculate differently, so read the endorsement on your declarations page.

## Versions and limits that change the payout

The same label covers several legal structures, each with its own payee and cancellation rules.

- **Auto policy endorsement.** Added to your policy for scheduled vehicles that carry the required physical-damage coverage; the GE 425 form requires both collision and other-than-collision coverage.
- **Lender or dealer GAP waiver.** The creditor agrees to cancel some or all eligible debt after a total loss. Connecticut treats a qualifying waiver as a debt waiver, not insurance.
- **Creditor GAP insurance.** Protects the lender or lessor, usually backing a creditor's waiver of your gap amount.
- **Debtor or lessee GAP insurance.** Protects you when the creditor has not waived the obligation.
- **Replacement-vehicle benefit.** California permits up to $5,000 toward buying or leasing another vehicle, according to the [California Department of Insurance (opens in a new tab)](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/0200-industry/0120-notices/upload/NoticeCreditAB2782.pdf), and Connecticut allows a waiver to give a credit toward a replacement vehicle.

Price depends on the insurer's filed rating rules and the form you choose, and the payout depends on the specific endorsement or waiver. Loan lease payoff coverage and [gap insurance](https://riskado.com/insurance-terms/gap-insurance/) often describe the same protection, though the product you hold may be an endorsement, creditor or debtor GAP insurance, or a lender's debt waiver, according to the [NAIC (opens in a new tab)](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/consumer-auto-shopping-tool.pdf).

## Where it shows up

The coverage belongs to personal auto insurance and sometimes commercial auto, not homeowners, renters, life, health or pet policies. You may see it as an optional selection on a quote, as a coverage line and premium on the declarations page, as a form listed with your policy documents, on a renewal notice that adds, removes or reprices it, and in a claim letter explaining a total-loss settlement. The declarations page shows whether an insurer's endorsement applies; the endorsement holds the limit, exclusions and calculation.

## What Connecticut and New York require

Connecticut's guaranteed asset protection waiver is not insurance, its charge must be stated separately and it must be cancellable, under [Conn. Gen. Stat. § 36a-789 (opens in a new tab)](https://www.cga.ct.gov/CURRENT/PUB/CHAP_669.HTM#sec_36a-789). If you cancel within 60 days and no benefits were paid, you get a full refund; after that, or if the loan ends early, you get a pro-rata refund less any cancellation fee, which cannot exceed $50. No refund is due once benefits have been provided, and the creditor must send any refund within 60 days of receiving the cancellation. Separately, a Connecticut consumer lease generally may not make you responsible for the gap amount after a total loss, apart from failures to keep required insurance, fraud or gross negligence, or governmental forfeiture, under [Conn. Gen. Stat. § 42-417 (opens in a new tab)](https://www.cga.ct.gov/2023/pub/chap_743aa.htm#sec_42-417).

New York defines GAP insurance and its creditor and debtor forms in [N.Y. Insurance Law § 1113 (opens in a new tab)](https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/ISC/1113) and defines the gap amount in [N.Y. Insurance Law § 107 (opens in a new tab)](https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/ISC/107). If a retail installment contract makes you responsible for the gap amount, the holder must give a conspicuous notice before the contract and, where qualifying creditor GAP insurance is obtained, offer to waive the gap for a separate charge no higher than that insurance costs, under [N.Y. Personal Property Law § 302-A (opens in a new tab)](https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/PPA/302-A). New York does not require every buyer to purchase GAP insurance or a waiver.

## Questions to ask an agent or insurer

1. Does the coverage appear on the declarations page for this specific vehicle? That confirms the endorsement applies to the financed or leased car.
2. Is the benefit based on actual cash value, the insurer's physical-damage payment or another amount? The starting figure sets the size of the gap.
3. Which loan or lease charges are excluded? Ask about deductibles, past-due payments, finance charges, excess mileage, wear and tear, warranties, credit insurance, collection and repossession expenses.
4. Is there a percentage or dollar cap on the benefit? GE 425 caps the benefit at 25% of actual cash value, and other forms use different limits.
5. Who receives the payment, and what happens if I pay off, refinance or replace the car? Endorsements, GAP insurance and waivers direct payment differently and carry different refund rules.

## Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions about loan/lease payoff coverage.

### Does it pay off any car loan?

It may pay the eligible gap after a covered total loss, subject to the endorsement's limit and exclusions. It does not necessarily cover past-due installments, excess mileage, wear and tear, finance charges, warranties or collection expenses.

### Does it cover repairs if my car is not totaled?

No. GAP definitions and the endorsement apply to a total loss, including one caused by theft or physical damage, according to the [New York DFS (opens in a new tab)](https://www.dfs.ny.gov/insurance/ogco2008/rg080320.htm). Ordinary repairs fall under collision or comprehensive coverage.

### Does it cover my deductible?

Not automatically. GE 425 subtracts the deductible when calculating actual cash value, and New York reviews whether a GAP policy form covers the physical-damage deductible, according to the [DFS filing questionnaire (opens in a new tab)](https://www.dfs.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2020/10/gap_cq.pdf). Ask how your form treats it.
